ONLINE GROWTH DRIVES SWEDEN GAMBLING MARKET TO SEK6.2BN IN Q1
Sweden’s licensed online and land-based gambling market grew by 5 per cent to SEK6.2bn (€608.7m) in the first quarter of 2021.
According to the latest data from the Swedish tax authority, gross gaming revenue (GGR) from commercial online betting and gaming accounted for nearly two-thirds of the total with GGR of SEK3.9bn, up 8 per cent compared to the same period last year.

Revenue from the state lottery and Vegas slot machine games rose 24 per cent year-on-year to SEK1.4bn, while GGR from other non-profit lotteries fell marginally to SEK858m and GGR from retail bingo halls fell 15 per cent to SEK44m.
Retail commercial gaming (including restaurant casinos) contributing just SEK6m in Q1, while land-based casino operations (Casino Cosmopol) generated no revenue for the fourth consecutive quarter due to COVID-related closures.
At the end of Q1, there were 101 companies holding active gaming licenses in the Swedish market, 71 of which are licensed to offer commercial online betting and gaming.
The data also revealed that almost 63,000 people had excluded from gambling using the national exclusion register Spelpaus by the end of the quarter, an increase of 6 per cent versus the previous quarter, with the number of self-exclusions climbing to almost 64,000 by mid-May.
