PORTUGAL BETTING AND GAMING MARKET GROWS 36% IN THIRD QUARTER

Portugal’s regulated online betting and gaming market continued to grow into the third quarter of 2021 as gross gaming revenue reached €114.2m.

Total GGR from the country’s 15 licensed online operators rose 36 per cent compared to the same period last year, although revenue was down 9 per cent versus the previous quarter’s €124.9m.

More than half of the quarterly total was derived from online casino as GGR increased 56 per cent to €64.8m, of which 78 per cent came from slots and 10 per cent from French roulette. Blackjack accounted for 5 per cent of GGR, with poker contributing a further 3.5 per cent and French Banca the remaining 4 per cent.

Sports betting GGR was up 16 per cent year-on-year at €49.3m during Q3, with football accounting for 82 per cent of the total. Tennis represented a further 13 per cent, with other sports accounting for the remaining 5 per cent share.

New player registrations increased by 3.5 per cent to 162,300 during the quarter, bringing the total number of registered players to 651,300, up 38 cent year-on-year. There were 100,800 self-excluded players by the end of the period, an increase of 62 per cent versus Q3 2020.

As with the second quarter of 2021, 61 per cent of the total registered player base were between the age of 25 and 44 years, with 18 to 24 year olds accounting for 22 per cent of the total.
