Sweden issues first wave of licenses to operators

Swedish gambling regulator Lotteriinspektionen has issued its first wave of operator license approvals for the newly regulated Swedish gaming market which opens on January 1st.

Lotteriinspektionen, soon to be renamed Spelinspektionen, has issued 16 licenses so far, out of 95 license applications received in total, of which more than 70 involve games providers for the iGaming market.

Sweden’s state owned operators Svenska Spel and AB Trav och Galopp (ATG) were among the first wave of operators to be approved, along with several leading Nordic-facing operators.

Kindred Group was approved for iGaming and betting licenses for five of its brands (,,,,, while Betsson received three approvals (, and

There were further iGaming and betting licenses approvals for other Nordic-facing operators Casumo, Interwetten and LeoVegas.

Others granted license approval include bet365, Tombola, GVC’s bwin and partypoker brands, and SuprNation, the Malta-based operator of the VoodooDreams, NYSpins and brands. SkillonNet was granted approval for 22 iGaming sites, including its PlayOJO, AhtiGames and Cozino brands.

"This is a historic day for Spelsverige. I am very proud that under severe pressure the Lotteriinspektionen staff, with a whole new legislation, worked out the first license decisions,” said Lotteriinspektionen director general Camilla Rosenberg.

"Since one of the objectives of the gaming reform was to achieve high channelisation, it is gratifying that many gaming companies that are currently targeting the Swedish market want to be part of the new licensing market after the turn of the year.”

The regulator said that it has also granted licenses with a shorter period than the maximum five years, although it did not specify to whom.

“In cases where we estimate that we need to follow the company extra carefully, we can grant a license for a shorter period,” said Rosenberg. “For example, it may be about past offenses in other markets.”

Kindred Group said that the license was an important part of its long-term strategy to operate in locally regulated markets, with the Swedish approval marking Kindred’s 13th local license.

“Today is a historic day for Kindred. We have been pushing for a modern and sustainable gambling market in Sweden from the very start of Unibet in 1997, in which the focus is on consumer protection and harm minimization,” said Kindred Group CEO Henrik Tjärnström.

“I am extremely proud and delighted that we have finally reached this point and look forward to a new and better future for Kindred, for local sport and for those who enjoy gambling in Sweden.”

Betsson, which has offered gaming entertainment to Swedish players since 1963, said that the new license finally enabled competition on equal terms.

“It is good that Sweden opens up the gaming market for free competition in a controlled environment,” said Betsson CEO Pontus Lindwall. “We look forward to operate on our Swedish home market as a recognised operator on equal terms.”

LeoVegas Group CEO Gustaf Hagman commented: "Finally - we have been waiting for this day for a long time and is a milestone in LeoVegas history. We have worked hard with the extensive application process and I am very proud of our work.

“In recent years we have invested substantially in responsible gaming and LeoSafePlay, an area that will continue to make up a fundamental part of our operations. Being among the first operators to receive a gambling licence is a quality seal and affirms LeoVegas as a leading, long-term and serious actor in the industry.”
